Developing a creative eye ––––––
Building the creative muscle in fashion design thanks to Jodorowsky’s narrative development technique.
01.
It is important for students to develop and explore an intuitive and personal approach in the creative practice development. In order to properly explore this area, I have created a workshop with a special focus on the process of ideas development using narrative development’s techniques.
02. THE SPECIFIC SOLUTION
This special technique is based on the 4 basic math formulas: addition, division, minus and multiplication.
Creativity can be explored through the use of imaging this formulas applied to details in fashion: what happens if I have a huge lapel collar? Or pocket? What would I do with it and would I interact with the idea? What if I remove buttons from a shirt? How, as designer, would I find a solution to fastening, if any? What if I remove pockets and I still need to carry personal items?
The techniques opened limitless possibilities of exploration, useful during the process of research in order to develop interesting and unique ideas.
The process is suitable to explore different areas of fashion design: it can be applied to design ( garments and details), developing ideas through collages and illustrations but also for textile and print making.
Students also explored mark making and print development with the same technique: what if I remove a print or colour rather than add it to a garment? What if I multiply a colour/shade playing with layering? How would I apply division to a print?
03. THE OUTCOME
Those questions generates deep thinking and helps developing problem solving skills, both very valuable skills in the marketplace.
